Section 7
26. Jacaranda
Scientific name: Jacaranda mimosifolia
Provenance: Bolivia to northwestern Argentina
Conservation status: Vulnerable
Get back on the looping path. Make a right at the path juncture with a map of the Arboretum and you will be on the way to the main entrance. Just before and beyond the fountain on your left are jacaranda trees. Jacaranda is famous for its stunning lavender-colored flowers which bloom from April to early summer. The leaves are intricately shaped, filtering and creating a soft lighting under the tree’s airy canopy. The species’ fruits are a hard, disk-shaped capsule which contains seeds. Jacarandas can grow very rapidly but break easily in strong winds, especially when its branches are drooped; regular pruning can combat a jacaranda tree’s structural weaknesses.
27. Chinese Fringe Tree
Scientific name: Chionanthus retusus
Family: Oleaceae
Provenance: Central and southern China, Japan (central Honshu, Tsushima), South Korea, Taiwan (central Honshu, Tsushima)
Conservation status: Not evaluated
Walk past the main entrance. Just before the Peacock Cafe is the Chinese fringe tree on your right. The scientific genus of this tree, Chionanthus, is Greek for “snow” and “flower.” Incredible white flowers cover the tree in spring and release a delicate fragrance. It is a small wonder that the species is related to jasmine and lilac. Blue berries appear in fall amid a yellow canopy that is up to 20 feet (~6 meters) wide. A gray-brown bark adds a neutral color to the appearance of the tree, becoming ridged and furrowed with age.
This stop concludes the Favorite Tree Walk tour. Thank you!
